I’m over on the Seven Hills Crafts blog today with the mini version of one of my favourite birthday die sets from The Greetery.
The Takes the Cake series is a real favourite for creating fancy birthday cake cards, but there’s also a wonderful mini version of the dies that allows you to create different cake styles on a smaller scale.
Great for pairing with tags and layering dies!

I started out by creating my tiered cake from cream cardstock with the layers coloured in with Saltwater Taffy Distress Ink. For a touch of glam, I cut the frosting from pastel glitter card and the cake stand from gold metallic card. A great way to use up your scraps!
For my tag element, I used the large Crimped Circle Tag, but needed something to make the cake stand out against the white background.
A rosette was my first idea, but I didn’t have any rosette dies the right size.
No problem!
I cut a piece of vellum with a circle die and went over it with the Saltwater Taffy ink pad to make it match the colour palette.
I then snipped into it with a pair of scissors to create that ruffled fringe look.
The colour was still a little too light, so I went over the snipped rosette again with the ink pad and some of the ink settled into the cut lines. I dabbed off the excess ink by pressing the rosette between two sides of printer paper.
For my background, I cut the Deco Frame from Sea Glass cardstock and mounted it on my card base.
Then it was time to add the decorative party accents – with the Curly Q Streamer dies cut from pastel pink glitter cardstock, the bow from The Greetery’s Christmas Pudding die cut from a darker shade of aqua cardstock, and a glittery silver star to finish off the tag.
I’m still making my way through all the sentiments I stamped and cut from Waffle Flower’s Birthday Wishes set – such a time-saver and more importantly, the perfect sentiment for this card!
Finally, I added some sparkly sequins to complete the look.
